I am on a wireless connection to a 7 MPS cable connection.

If the database believes that I have not shut Snarfer down properly, just what must I do to shut it down properly? The ways that I have shut it down do not seem to convince it that I have done so.

I will try to check the task manager and see if I can determine whether it is still running.

Thanks

                                      The message appears when the database has detected that Snarfer wasn't shut down properly. Much of the time this means Snarfer was getting messages at the time of shutdown. Are you on a slower connection? It isn't perfect and is meant as simple protection so if you sure all is well just hit cancel to skip.
Whenever I start my PC I get an error message that Snarfer was not properly shut down and an option to check things or skip the procedure. I have tried shutting Snarfer with File > Exit and by clicking on the red x in the upper right corner of the window. It appears to make no difference how I do it.

I was unable to find anything about this in the FAQs, but I did find one post in the tech support forum asking the same question, although there was no answer.

I am using Win XP Pro, with current updates, and Snarfer 1.0.2.

Can anyone provide guidance on how to deal with this?

Thanks in advance!

                                      You can use the API (at least the database portion of it) from a different application, but only if Snarfer is not running at the same time.

If you need Snarfer to be running while you're accessing the database then you'll have to write the code in a plugin. However, the plugin could use some form of IPC to transmit data to an external application if that is what you need.

                                      We do - it's just not fully documented yet. If you have a look at the Development Wiki you can see what we've documented so far.

Ideally you'd use one of the higher level APIs for accessing messages in the database. If you look in the interfaces.h header file, downloadable from the tutorials, you can see all of the available interfaces. However, if there's not enough information for you to work out how to use them yourself, you can try using the lower level database API, which has at least been partially documented (see the Database section of the wiki).

                                      Snarfer is just being careful to make sure database is ok. This mostly happens if machine is shut down before Snarfer closes (meaning it was still grabbing feed data). While rare we had one user with this issue who was just hitting power button to shut down cause it was quicker. If you sure machine was shut down properly you can hit cancel to bypass database check.

                                      I'm having the same problem. Also, every time boot up my machine, I get the following error message: " Snarfer has detected that it was not shut down properly", and wants to check files. I'm new to Snarfer, and overall, I think it's outstanding, but if i can't get these quirks ironed out, I'll probably go elsewhere...

                                      When you add a new feed there's a checkbox to download archived posts but this only works if blog is setup to provide. So basicly it's all controled on the blog side.

So you are saying that there is no control at Snarfer side, because last time when I use zoundry, the control is ta zoundry to download how many post from the blogger. Please let me know if there is any control at snarfer of how many post can be downloaded. thanks

Practically all the external Snarfer-download sites list your program as Windows 2000-compatible. However, the page on the Snarfer site makes no mention of this OS. I am of course hoping the external sites are correct.

If your current version is really incompatible , then kindly inform me which was the last version to support this OS. Some external download sites have quite a choice of prior versions so if this is the case, it should be no problem.

I should point out that Windows 2000 is still under (extended) support by Microsoft, and barring extensions, will continue in this status until at least the summer of 2010. The only thing that has expired is they will now charge if you ask for support ( , yes, that's what they say) nor are they accepting requests for new features. Otherwise, within the context of their Extended Support Program, it is still an active OS.

                                      In the past couple of days, I've been getting dialog boxes popping up. Title bar says Snarfer 1.0.2 - Security Warning. Body asks if I want to install Adobe Flash Player Installer. I recently upgraded Flash to v10 a few days ago, but I guess Snarfer doesn't realize that? I don't get the warning from any browser (I mainly use Firefox 3). My OS is Vista SP1. Is this a bug?

                                      hi, I'm a long time snarfer user, lately I startde noticing that sometimes the program shuts down with no warning at all, the windows just closes. when i lounch it again it gives me a message that the app was not shut down properly and if i want to check all the files. this thing happens rarely, but it does, and it is not related to some other sotware on mt machine.
am I the only one having this sort of problem?

                                      When Snarfer starts, it frequently reports that it was not shut down correctly and must check the files. Normally it goes through that process and doesn't complain again. The last two times I've started my machine, Snarfer gives me this message, then crashes during the self-check. What files should I post here to aid in debugging?

Thanks;

First go to the Windows Control Panel. If you're using the Category View you should see a short list of categories, one of which is Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices. Select that, and you'll be given a list of tasks, one of which is Change the sound scheme. Select that, and you'll get a dialog with a list of Program Events from various applications.

If your Control Panel is using the Classic View you'll see a longer list of categories and the one you want is just called Sound and Audio Devices. Select that, and you'll get straight to the dialog, but you'll first need to select the Sounds tab to get to the list of Program Events.

In the Program Events list look for an entry for the Snarfer New Message event. Select that, and then choose a sound from the Sounds list at the bottom of the dialog.
Hi,

I have just downloded Snarfer and surprise with it's file size and work, well the most irritating things for the people who use rss reader for tracking their hundreads of feeds from work, i am financial analysit and i track lots of feed at a time and the timing of feed update is most important.

I wanted u to add a features like Desktop Alert, becasue it to tedious to go back to reader and read all feeds, if u can add features like to get update on selected feeds on desktop when new feeds are arrived or for perticular folder in which new feeds are arrived.

Will be waiting for your answare.

Regards,
Thanks

Thanks for the response - unfortunately the link above directs to "The topic or post you requested does not exist"...
If you could repost the instructions, that'd be great. I've searched my system and can't find any obvious clues in the Registry, nor any suitable config files on disk.
I have created a bunch of Google searches feeds and I have noticed that the number of new messages per refresh is never more than 10. Initially I thought this may be related to the settings in the Google preferences (default search results is 10), but even after I changed the preferences setting to 100 (using three different browsers, Firefox 3, IE 7, Opera 9.5), I still seem to be limited to 10 messages per refresh. Is the maximum number of 10 something that is being determined by Snarfer and if that is the case, can I change this value? Thanks for your help.

Is yours set to keep only the most recent maybe?
Love Snarfer and use it daily. Frustrated by one thing. I'm reading a feed..autorefresh kicks in...the feed I'm reading is deleted.

Is there someway to prevent this from happening without going to manual refresh?

Thanks.

Quote:
When you go to a folder the newst posts are always on top (desending order)

Not with mine. I've even tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program, same thing everytime: when I go to a folder it does look like a few of the newest posts appear first, but then when I scroll down all the other posts are out of order. Many of the posts share the same date, but their time stamp is different (News Folders). However, the folder is not sorting in a descending order by Date and Time (and I've played with the Reserve order option as well). And on occasion I see that a newer post is somewhere down the middle of the list with the whole line in italics. Looking closer at the way the posts are sorted in my folders, I've tried to make sense if there is any sort order other than Date, but no luck.

Thanks
Hi, new Snarfer here.....

I use Google Desktop Search on my PC. Do you know if there's a plug-in for that so my newsfeeds get indexed? Or is there any way of doing that? I searched the forums and Google's desktop search plug-in page, but couldn't find anything. Thanks!

BTW, Snarfer looks great even though I've only used it for about an hour!

Every single time I click on a folder, I have to manually click on the date heading to sort by date, otherwise all the messages are displayed in an unhelpful order.
Is that something new? Because I'm positively sure it used to be the case that I could see the address bar showing the link of the page that I'm viewing - and often from there continue browsing other sites by just changing the address. Or maybe it was the case that inside the preview pane I clicked on a link that changed that preview pane into a web-page with an address bar. I'll try that. But I definitely know that I used to use the address bar while it was in the middle of the window (the barrier between the preview pane and the headlines).

Thanks.

                                      When your viewing a message in Snarfer preview pane it's local (not a webpage) so no browser controls are displayed. If you open a message (double-click) in preview pane that's a webpage and browser controls are displayed.

                                      Hi,

I'm all of a sudden missing my Address Bar in the preview pane. I used to be able to see the link of the RSS feed (and copy it to a browser if I wanted to) - but now I only see the line that separates the headlines from the preview.
I couldn't find any option to turn that back on.

Oddly enough - when I open the Snarfer Help Center - the address bar is right there (full page view). However, if I try to open a new feed in that newly opened tab - the address bar disappears again.

Thanks.

                                      This is a problem with the feed. Their dates look like this:

Sun, Aug 31 2008 15:00:01 +1000

when they should look like this:

Sun, 31 Aug 2008 15:00:01 +1000

Note the day and month are the wrong way around.

Snarfer actually handles the swapped day and month, but detects this as a non-standard date format in which the year usually comes after the time. So it parses 2008 as the time 8:08 pm and parses the 15 (or whatever) in the time as the year 2015.

I'll see what I can do to get Snarfer to handle this format in a future release, but your best short-term solution would be to report the problem to the website.

                                      I have posted this before and have followed all instructions to attempt to fix the problem and nothing is working. Sometime between 8/4/08 and 8/6/08, Craig's list added a sub category to the car and truck search: 1.) cars and trucks all 2.) cars and trucks by dealer 3.) cars and trucks by owner 4.) cars and trucks (still there on some but nobody uses) . Snarfer has ceased picking up any of these listings if the first, second or third option is chosen above. I have searched for other craig's list search tools and none of them come close to Snarfer when it is working. Please, Please, Please help.
Is there a place that shows what version of the plugin that you have installed? I went to:

Tools | Options | Plugins tab | Properties

But it does not show there. Nor does the Help | About screen show what plugins are install much less their version.

I installed the updated plugin, did a File | Exit and when I restart snarfer and create a new craigslist search, I still can't select the missing cities I mention in my previous post. I even tried shutting down my PC (Windows XP Home Edition) and restarting and that did not help.

Am I missinig a step here? Thanks

                                      It appears as though a recent addition to the listing criteria for cars and trucks, ie. the selection of dealer vs owner is causing craig's list searches to be incomplete. Is there a way to update this search? Is there a workaround? Snarfster, please help.

                                      Since the code for the file didn't completely show up in my previous post; I have made a nice little package in a zip file so that people can get an Open in Firefox option in the IE right click menu (works within Snarfer as well).

You can download it from my website: IE Firefox Open (1.05 MB)

Make sure to read the readme.txt file so you know how to install it.

I hope this helps someone until Snarfer decides to put in an open in external browser button.
As the method that goofy suggested bypasses the internal browser completely, which I doubt is what most people would want.

Snarfer, I think you're missing the point of what he is asking.

I had the same problem. I have been using Feedemon for many years and I have become used to the little button in the browser that you can click on and it launches the current page in Feedemon in your default browser. That button is missing in Snarfer. If you click on view original article it takes you to the original page inside of Snarfster, but there is no easy way to open it in your default browser. The only way to open it in the default browser is to copy and paste the link from Snarfster and into the web browser. Not as easy as pressing a button and having the default browser open and load the page that you want automatically.

Since I really like Snarfer's speed compared to Feedemon, I decided to work with it and I found a workaround for this problem. I really hope that Snarfster can add that (Open Link in External Browser) button some day and also tabbed browsing like Feedemon has than this RSS reader would definitely be tops.

Anyway, here is the workaround I found, as far as I know this only works with Firefox, however you can probably edit the code and make it work with any browser.

Please note credit for this script goes to smonkey from this forum: http://www.ozoneasylum.com/7692

Anyway what you want to do is create a new file (save as .txt and then rename the file to fopen.html after pasting the code into it) and paste the following code in it:

Code:

<html>

<body>

<script language="javascript">

/*

This script is offered as-is, with no warranty , implied or otherwise.

This is to be used entirely at your own risk.

In other words, if you run this & it breaks your computer, it's not my fault.

*/

<var>

</script>

</body>

</html>

After you have pasted it, call the file fopen.html. After that, place the file where ever you want to keep it on your hard drive. Put it in a safe place and make sure to note the path of where the file is.

Now open up regedit by going to start>run and typing regedit and hitting enter.

Navigate to this: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/MenuExt

Right click on MenuExt and click on New>Key

Name the key: &Open in Firefox

Making sure &Open in Firefox is highlighted in regedit; on the right hand side you should see (Default), double click on (Default) and for the value data type in **PATH TO FOPEN.HTML**\fopen.html Obviously replace **PATH TO FOPEN.HTML** with where you saved fopen.html on your hard drive. *For example if you saved fopen.html in your firefox folder you would type in C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\fopen.html

THAT'S IT. Now just restart all instances of IE that includes Snarfer. When you start up Snarfer again, you will be able to view webpages in Firefox easily. All you have to do in Snarfer is hit View Original Article (or double click on the feed), and when it loads the original webpage in it's internal browser just right click in the browser window in Snarfer and in the right click menu you will see Open in Firefox. Makes it a lot easier.

I have tested this to work in both Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista Ultimate SP1. Good Luck All credit for this goes to smonkey from Ozone Asylum.

Like I said before, hopefully Snarfer development team can implement an Open in External Default Browser button so that this workaround can go extinct.
I am getting the "A Runtime Error has occurred" message on occasions, often with an option to debug the error. In your FAQ you state that we should disable script debugging in IE... well my work requires that I have those options enabled (so I can debug Javascript in VisualStudio). Please suggest an alternative workaround, or consider patching snarfer appropriately.

For the record, your FAQ also suggests using "an external browser" and setting the desired browser to be the default browser... please consider an enhancement request to allow snarfer users to optionally specify WHICH browser they want to use (path to executable would suffice), rather than forcing them to always use the default browser of the system. EG. I want to use Firefox for snarfer (and Firefox is installed), but corporate policy dictates that IE must remain my default browser...

                                      I second the problem. It seems not only does snarfer consume 100% cpu but it also hangs the whole PC as a result. I cannot even open the task manager, switch applications, move the cursor, or even reboot... the only way to fix it is a hard reboot (hold the power button in for 5 seconds). When snarfer is disabled, no problems, but when it is running, I have problems every single time.

Please consider this a serious issue and investigate further.
